New Wheels-A Muscle Car BatmobileIf there is one thing to get film fans, petrol heads, and self-confessed nerds all revved up, it is news about the new Batmobile.

For movie lovers and car enthusiasts alike, it is up there with rumours about the latest Bond movie, where comic book fans want to know all about the next Batman film, called…er…’ The Batman’.

The film’s director Matt Reeves, known for embracing social media during a production, rose fan excitement to a fever pitch, after posting pictures on Twitter of the vehicle the Caped Crusader will be driving in the new movie.

The images feature Robert Pattinson’s Batman, in full costume, standing next to his sleek new car, which seems more at home in a Fast and the Furious movie. Some fans have even said it somewhat resembles a compact, modified muscle car, with flared wheel arches and a visible, powerful-looking engine.

Movie and car lovers have also commented the vehicle has a homemade, custom-built appearance, as if Bruce Wayne put it together himself in the Batcave. This is understandable, as Batman is a brilliant mechanic in the comic books, and in some versions of his backstory, his butler Alfred ran his own garage and taught him everything he knew.

The lack of bluster and grandiosity of the new Batmobile apparently sum up Reeve’s noirish, gritty approach to the superhero.

The 1960’s Batman TV show, starring Adam West, featured a Batmobile fashioned from a 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car. When the ‘Batman’ movie, with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, came out in 1989, they constructed a brand-new vehicle from the ground up, especially for the film.

Director Christopher Nolan, when he made ‘Batman Begins’ in 2005, the first of what came to be known as The Dark Knight Trilogy, (followed by ‘The Dark Knight’ in 2008 and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in 2012, with Christian Bale playing Batman), he had the superhero drive a military vehicle, a sort of hybrid of a sports car and a Hummer, known as a Tumbler.

The most recent movie incarnation of Batman, played by Ben Affleck, with Zack Snyder at the helm, had the Caped Crusader drive what could best be described as a squat tank.

However, with a new filmmaker, Matt Reeves, in the director’s chair, the character is seemingly taking a more grounded, street-level tact, in the style of a classic mystery story (Batman is supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, after all).

‘The Batman’ is shooting in various locations, including Glasgow, said to be doubling for Gotham City, where they filmed a motorcycle chase and cemetery sequence at the GlasgowNecropolis.

Fans can’t wait to see the new Batmobile in action when the movie is released in the UK in June 2021.
